Hotel Review: InterContinental San Francisco

I recently did a quick weekend trip to San Francisco (like straight to the airport on Friday after work and back Sunday evening).

I have a bunch of points with the InterContinental Rewards Club so decided to stay at the InterContinential San Francisco, which only requires 45,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night. Plus, since I hold the Chase IHG Rewards Club credit card, I will receive 10% of my points back after my stay, meaning two nights will only cost 81,000 points.

I took the BART train directly from SFO, which takes about 45 minutes. From the Powell station, the IC San Francisco is a short 12 minute (downhill) walk. From the outside, the hotel, in my opinion, is very sophisticated looking. I love the type of glass that is used on this building.

The lobby is modern with the check-in desk right as you walk in.

There was no queue to check-in. The associate that checked me in was prompt, friendly, and processed everything quickly. He explained all the benefits I’d received for being a Platinum member, which includes free wi-fi, and notified me that I had been upgraded to a Deluxe View King Room. I also was offered a Platinum amenity of 600 bonus IHG Rewards Club points.

I took the elevator to the 27th floor to the assigned room, 2715.

It was located halfway down the hallway, and was a standard king room.

The room featured a king size bed, small armchair, desk with chair, coffeemaker, mini-bar, and flat screen TV. Pretty standard stuff.

The name of the room was “Deluxe King View” and the view was pretty phenomenal.

The bathroom was pretty standard, with a sink, tub/shower combo, and toilet.

The bathroom featured Eco-Boutique-branded toiletries. I wasn’t a huge fan of the scent, but there was nothing wrong with it – just not my cup of tea.

On the whole I thought the room was just fine – nothing super special – but then again, the room was free. One nice little touch was that on each side of the bed were easily accessible electrical outlets that were within arm’s reach.

Another nice touch is the room had an electronic control to indicate “Do Not Disturb” as well as “Make Up Room.” When pressed, lights on the outside indicate your preference. Pretty neat!

On the sixth floor is an indoor lap pool and the gym, which was nicely equipped and pretty spacious. Sorry for a poor picture of the pool but it was busy each time I visited and felt a little awkward taking random photos of people I don’t know that are half-naked.

Also on the sixth floor are several large outdoor terraces that had plenty of seating and lounge chairs. A great place to catch some rays if the sun comes out in San Francisco!

My only beef with staying here, and this has NOTHING to do with the InterContinental, is that as a platinum elite member, you get pretty much zero perks or anything special when staying on points. So no club lounge, no free breakfast. Heck, the agent couldn’t even give me a drink voucher even though I turned on the charm. Oh well.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely.

Have you stayed at InterContinental San Francisco? If so, what was your experience?
