In 1351, Zürich joined the Swiss Confederation, and during the Middle Ages, the city became rich, mainly due to textiles and banking. In 2020, Zürich was declared the most expensive city in the world. Zürich is a blend of cosmopolitan and international with a small city and provincial life. The city center is very compact and most of the places to see in Zürich are right in the center along both sides of the Limmat River, which flows out of Lake Zürich.
